slight cartilage tear

Hi,

I have just found out after a couple of months that I have slightly torn my left cartilage playing football. The physio that i saw advised me that there is a case for and against me having surgery. In her opinion she advised that the last thing that should be done is to have part of my cartilage removed and with some physio hopefully it will heal on its own. Does this sound right? If i do have physio and in time carry on playing football will this make the tear worse and do even more damage?
