Pitting Oedema following acute ankle injury

Just need to ask a question to some musculoskeletal folk, as I don't normally see acute ankle injuries...

A colleague sustained a nasty (right) ankle injury 2 weeks ago whislt playing football. Mechanism of injury was inversion with pressure to the back of the calf, as an opponent missed a tackle.

He has had severe swelling since the injury, some of which is still pitting - specifically over the anterior distal third of the Tib and fib.

Is the pitting any cause for concern? It may be that it is quite common, but I haven't come across is post injury before (although its not technically my field).

Is there any bony tenderness? Has it been XRayed? If not bony tenderness have you assessed ligements eg.ATFL?

X-rays showed no boney injury. Tender when palpating over the lateral malleolus but there is no increased pain with diagnositic ultrasound over the same area.
Ligaments do not appear to be injured and there is minimal swelling over the lateral malleolus itself.

I had a similar case recently following a horse riding injury, patient in excellent health no evidence of heart disease or kidney et al, and in any case unilateral. I suspect fluid leakage from end arterioles/ vascular compromise due to crush impact. In this case not an acute presentation but chronic, never had treatment for it. Had good result so far with effleurage and tennis ball rolling under foot on weight bearing.
