Medial Knee Pain Swelling around entire knee
can anyone throw light on this? 69yr old male avid golf player with knee pain.
swelling around entire knee-did not decrease NSAIDs, compression bandage minimal improvement.
XRay NAD.
pain at medial knee and posterior calf difficult to WB
aggravated by extension, alleviated by rest and knee flexion
pain increased when rising from chair, knee protected in flexion when mobilising.
I was originally thinking bursitis until symptoms progress now im thinking MCL/ Medial meniscal damage???
Re: Medial Knee Pain Swelling around entire knee
if it is difficult to extend and protected in flexion, I would for sure think MCL as a differential... did you do a valgus test? It could be either, or both MCL and medial
meniscus.
Another key question in the history is when the swelling came on, if suddenly than likely MCL, if slowly later, than probably meniscus.
Re: Medial Knee Pain Swelling around entire knee
Check L3 unilateraly for protective behaviour using the Continuous Mobilisation Protocol, Most likely you will find hypomobility there. Restoration of normal mobility will most likely reveal this knee trouble to be the result of abnormal nerve root irritation caused by spinal protective behaviour, in doing so the pain and swelling will most likely dissappear within 24 hours post Rx.
Cheers
Re: Medial Knee Pain Swelling around entire knee
I agree with physiosam... sounds like either a MCL tear or medial meniscal tear. I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. A knee brace or the temporary use of crutches may be required during weight bearing to prevent further aggravation.
Good luck with recovery,

May you ask your patient again when he has pain?
And this time it's swelling may be you try decrease it.
Because it's still swelling from inflammation or non-inflammation.
But i read your information i think the same physiotherapist(MCL MM).
