Knee popped 3 times quickly

I was at brazilian jui jitsu training yesterday and i was laying on my back with my legs wrapped round an guys waist who was kneeling in front of me, i put my right foot over his head and put the outside of my shin into his throat and then pulled his head down to choke him but unfortunatly he fell on top of me (all 16stone of him) and this pushed my leg down to my body fast and the outside of my knee crunched and popped 3 times quickly like it had popped out of joint quickly. he quickly jumped off me and i rolled about for a bit in pain then when i looked around everyone in the gym was looking as the popping sound was so loud that everyone stiopped what they were doing. if i could describe the sound it was like wrapping 3 lots of marbles in some bubble wrap and throwing them on the ground.

straight after this there wasnt louds of pain, althoug ached more and more as time went by, it really hurt if i lifted my foot off the ground and tried to wobble my leg from side to side (not extending it), it hurts badly if my joint goes outwards at the knee. today i can walk but now and again i tumble if the knee goes at a certain angle, usually turning or walking round a corner.
I have looked at the knee joint online and if i could have a guess i would say it may be the cartilage. The pain is to touch and the the knee going outward (the way it was caused in the first place), the location of the pain is right in the little gap between the 2 bone ends of the knee on the outside, and it even hursts badly to touch.


sorry for the long story but though i better put it in detail so i get more of a response that may help.

it's quite possibe to damage cartilage in the manner which you described. how are you doing now?

how did the knee react in the hours and days following injury?
did it swell quickly or overnight or not at all?
do you have full range of movement, equal to the unaffected leg?
aside from the giving way you described, has there been any locking or any more clicking?

i have the full range of motion, just a bit stiffer. I just cant move the knee side to side. where you can feel the lateral ligament, on my effected leg it just feels a little mushy, not hard thin ligament like on my good leg. Also, the bottom of my thigh bone right by the joint hurts to touch.
no giving away, if i go on it wrongly i think it is my reaction to kind of tumble to take the weight off it.
straight after the injury, the knee just felt unstable, lose, no swelling until the day after and even that was very minor as it was just a little by the ligament area. half hour after the injury it started to ache and feel even more unstable.
the last couple days it has felt a bit better although today it feels stiff and a bit painful, nothing major though. i dont get any locking or clicking at all, just aching and stiffness and bad pain if my leg goes sideways (ie the knee goes outwards)

from that it sounds like a lateral collateral ligament tear. it sounds like a moderate to bad tear, i'd recommend you go see someone experienced. management can get tricky if you dont approach it properly.

mma1980...Can you tell me if you ever went to the doctor for this? I ask because the same thing happened to me this weekend. I was on an airplane and when I turned sideways to get into my seat, my knee popped 3 times and it was so loud! Wehn it happened I just fell into my seat cause it felt like my leg was jello. WHen the plane landed and I got out of my seat, I fell back into my seat 2 times before I could even get up. I could only walk very slowly. It has been 2 days now and my knee feels very sore and stiff. Only when I turn a corner is when I feel like it might pop again. Can you tell me what eneded up happening with your knee? Thanks!

Same thing happened to me in BJJ. What ever became of it? Please let me know if you got it checked out or if it just healed on its own.

Went to a Chiroprator and he put my knee back in place.
