Strengthening Day 1 Muscle Strain
I had a patient in the other day with a hamstring strain. He'd been talking to a friend of his in Australia who plays high level rugby. Apparently, they are strengthening muscle strains Day1-2 post injury. Is this right? I asked the patient all about it, but he was vague. Seemed to think they strengthen the injured muscle asap. Does this sound right to people in Sports physio in Australia? Is there any evidence supporting it and what is the rationale behind it?
I'm a bit our the scene over there and it sounds like something they're trialling, or perhaps they're strengthening all around the injury?
Hope someone has some information.
Thanks

Re: Strengthening Day 1 Muscle Strain
Hi Miff
I am not a sports physio so someone more knowledgeable may comment.
However as a treatment it seems a bit extreme. While immobilistation maybe counterproductive with most injuries, this sounds going a bit far.
Here is one interesting study that compared stretching and strengthening and Icing for acute hamstrings vs trunk stabilisation, progressive agility and icing. Interestingly the second group did better long term than the localised hamstring stretching and strengthening, with faster resumption of sport and less reinjury.
