long term pain fractured talus
I had a fall 5 and a half months ago and sustained a chip fracture to the body of the talus (left ankle) and tore ligaments and a tendon. The fracture was very small and I spent 10 weeks in a 'boot' cast non-weight bearing and then 6 weeks with the boot weight-bearing. The swelling lasted for a long time. I have had physio as the tendon/ligament injury and lack of use caused pain and stiffness and although I am able to walk without crutches and my foot is much more mobile I am having quite severe, localised pain, sometimes on the top of my foot (over the fracture site on the talus) and sometimes the outside of my foot (the side of the talus bone) when I walk (weightbearing and flexing). There is also still some very slight swelling. Is this normal? Someone suggested a bone chip could be causing the pain & moving around the joint? Can you suggest anything to help? Am extremely frustrated at the time it is taking to get back to normal!:(
Many thanks....ShirleyB
Re: long term pain fractured talus
Post fracture can be a very slow rehab. If your worried about the bone chip moving around then you should visit your GP to get it re XRay'd to see wether it is healed now. I would have thought you would have had this already when you came out of immobilisation?
Post immobilisation regaining ROM is painful and you can expect some slight swelling as I think you've been out of the boot now for 1 month?
If you are unhappy with your current progress then when speaking to your physio and request a 2nd opinion within the physio clinic. Generally if the physio is a good one they will understand and be happy to obligue.
My thoughts is that the damage sounds extensive enough and if you were immobilised for 4 months then your current progress could be considered normal.
Good luck.
