changing role of NHS for neuro physio

“Physiotherapy and an Ageing Population: Meeting the needs of older people with neurological conditions through physiotherapy.”

I am a third year physiotherapy student at St. George’s University of London currently researching for an assignment to analyse what affect an ageing population will have on the practice of a physiotherapist and the physiotherapy profession as a whole, and I would be very grateful if you could share with me your insight into this topic.

In particular I was hoping to tease out your opinion on how you think the role of physiotherapy could change, or needs to change in the future to provide the best quality of care for older patients with neurological deficits particularly in the community. For example, do you think we will need more physiotherapists in the future or will services have to be delivered in different ways in different locations to meet with the demands of this rapidly rising population. Are physiotherapists the best profession suited to meeting the demands of this population with neurological impairments. Are there any particular weaknesses/strengths that you have identified in current practice.
