ACL revision using hamstring from other leg
Hi,
I am having an ACL revision in about 7 weeks time as a previous ACL reconstruction has failed. As they used my hamstring for the first graft they are using my hamstring from my other leg for the second attempt.....just wondering if anyone knows if/how different it will be this time round?
It wasnt exactly pleasant the first time but now i am having both legs opened up i dont really know what to expect i.e will i be able to walk/use crutches as normal? I think i was only on them about 2 weeks last time.
If anyone has had this done before or can tell me if having the graft from your good leg is any worse/the same that would be great. :)
Re: ACL revision using hamstring from other leg
Having the graft taken is like having a muscle tear of the hamstrings. So you'll now have bilateral knee pains. The graft is theoretically no different. But because you'll have 2 'bad' sides you'll have to proceed slower and will likely spend a bit longer on your crutches.
The ACL side could heal quicker as it hasnt had the hamstring surgery on that side. But overall I would think you'll be out of action a bit longer.
Re: ACL revision using hamstring from other leg
Thanks for that, i tried to ask the physio when i found out i'd need it doing again but couldnt really get the question across without it sounding stupid! Then wondered if i'd missed something when i had my pre-op and the nurse placed a hell of a lot of emphasis on someone being there to 'help me get around' once i left hospital!
One thing i have noticed is how much the NHS has improved (well in my area anyway) - got a surgery date for less than 6 weeks after being referred! Pity i am going on holiday so have to wait a few weeks longer.
Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated.
