Spinal Injuries- Safe Transfer
Hi all,
When transferring a spinal injury in the acute phase from a trolley to the xray table or bed what is the safest method recommended?
Can you use a rollboard or pat slide?Would there be a chance of misalignment of the spine?
What are the pros and cons of using a scoop??
Can you recommend any websites??
Thanks everyone for your help.....:D
Re: Spinal Injuries- Safe Transfer
Hi Cleo75
I wouldn’t call myself an expert on the standard required for safe transfers in the acute phase. However I am sure that neither a pat slide nor a rollboard would provide adequate stability during a transfer
The Guide to handling of Patients Revised 4th edition states that you mustn’t manually lift a patient. As a minimum scoop stretchers and appropriate hoists must be used. The System AT2000 is a more advanced system that inserts a platform under the patient and then moves the patient sideways onto itself to home to another place The patient remains absolutely flat throughout the procedure. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any further info about it or other machines.
Perhaps you could contact the NHS, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association or the American Spinal Cord Injury Association to find out if they have set standards. Your own public Health system should have some standards for SCI patient transfers
