how hard is it for a foreign-trained PT to find a job in australia
hello. i'm a foreign-trained physiotherapist looking for greener pastures and better training. i have a 4-year experience as a physical therapist and i'm planning to pursue a career in australia. I searched through the process and it's a very long, expensive, and tedious.
If i accomplish this, am I guaranteed to find a job in australia? How much in terms of salary will most employers offer for foreigners like me? I'm only a degree holder and i learned that the competition is very tight since most jobs will be requiring an MA? how true is this? any response will be tremendouly appreciated.:)

Hi,
nice and easy questions - will give you short answers:

No. :) No guarantees. Job situation is very different in different environments/ districts/ areas of specialities.

They don't pay depending on nationality, but on work experience. Again, there is huge variations.

That you require an MA or MSc? Not true at all.
Getting registration will be the main hurdle.
And don't forget, you currently only get registration in the state in which you apply. In July 2010, Australia will change to a national registration process, which will be making things a lot easier.
Hope this helps,

hi fyzzio. thanks for the reply.
Are you also foreign-trained? (just curious). Do I need an agency to find a job or can I go direct? If i get a tourist visa in australia can I apply directly and find ways to convert the visa to a working permit?
I have a 4 year experience as a physiotherapist, 3 years in my country, 1 year in saudi, and now i'm currently working in Singapore. But i really love what i do, and a part of me wants to get good training and ofcourse good pay..so I thought Australia might be the best challenge for me. And one last question... how hard is the written exam and the practical exam?
Hey...thanks. really appreciate it.

You can do either. Some people get better results (= find a job) by using an agency, but employers do prefer you to apply yourself, as the agencies charge huge fees.
I don't know anyting about getting visas/ permits, but you cannot convert a visum into a permit. They are two different things.
Also don't know how difficult the exams are. That might depend on your recency of study and study contents, etc.
There are posts from study groups in this section of the forium - just check those, they might give you more information.
