Explanation PT and PT Assistant
Hi! I`m from germany where we don`t have this system of PT`s and PT Assistants. Please explain the difference in the training and the actual job duties of both professions. Is there a way for assistants to "rise" to the job of PT? (perhaps through online courses, etc.)
re: Explanation PT and PT Assistant
PT Assistants initially were untrained individuals who healped out in Physio Departments. They were interested individuals who may not have been granted entry into a degree study course or may have simply been people who like to assist the rehabilitation of others.
Duties of a PT assist have ranged from fetching patients and assisting manual handling to assisting the application of Plater and Splinting materials. Perhaps they are most appreciated in the neurology field where it is difficult to rehabilitate single handed.
More recently PT Assistant courses have been run. Canada was leading the way in the education and Australia (NSW) has a great introductory assistants course. This is steadily leading to a unique qualification and career structure that may ultimately aid entry into a physio degree course.
PTA's are an invaluable asset to any dept. The must be supervised for legal issues (though often are not). Many senior PTA's having had 20+ years experiece in a particluar field (such as amputees) can often do the job better than the newer graduates.
I hope this helps and the thoughts are purely off the top of my head!
