best universities in UK for MSc physiotherapy
hi everyone,,
I have an undergraduate degee in physiotherapy and would want to take up post grauation in UK.Currently, I have offers from QMU in Edinburgh and Glasgow Calednian. My main area of concern is specialising in a particular area of clinical practice and I have heard that QMU is good for research, which is not much of an interst to me. Also I am not much aware of other universities in UK which drive more focus on clinical practice rather than research.
Help and advice in any form is welcome. I have little time left to apply as I am planning to begin in septmber 2010. So please, reply back and guide me ASAP:(...

Re: best universities in UK for MSc physiotherapy
Hi eve cool,
There are many universities that offer MSc's, including the top rated ones such as Birmingham, Bath, Nottingham, St Thomas's in London, Southampton, Cardiff, Keele etc, most (I think) gear their studies towards research, as I believe it reflects better on the Uni's (having papers published gains better respect nationally and internationally).
I think you need to look at the course content for the main universities and decide from there which interests you most.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, it's all very subjective.

Many thanx Goosey..
It would really helpfull if you could clear a few more doubts. What qualifies one to get a job after post graduation in UK. Are dgrees from Scotland valued in England or is it difficult to get a job in England if one post graduates from Scotland? Also, does post graduation from less known/low ranked unis pose any problem when looking for a job in UK??
Re: best universities in UK for MSc physiotherapy
Hi again,
I can't really answer those questions as I am still an undergraduate, but I can give my advice.
You need to make sure that the course is affiliated to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists in the UK. (any placements we do have to be mentored by a CSP physio - to guarantee standards and quality....I think !)
I don't know about the Scottish Uni's but I would imagine they would be ok, you might be best to give the Scottish Uni's Admissions Department a call or email to be sure you can work throughout the UK after graduating.
The NHS is a little tough at the moment for jobs when you initially qualify, lots of posts have been frozen due to budget cuts. After a Post Graduate course, it may be different, but I really don't know. I believe they ideally prefer you to have completed 2 years rotational experience, as that ensures you have practical experience (but I don't know your background, so you make be ok already).
As for lesser or well known uni's, it's a competitive market so the better your qualifications and the better the uni.....may stand you in a better position when applying.
However, there is an element of luck and you need to interview well, so that may be more important....I don't really know the right answer.....I'm just trying to offer my advice.
I think you should speak or email a couple of Uni's and see what they say, they all want Post Grad Students. Think about your cost of living while you are studying, the further North you go, the cheaper it is to live (don't know about Scotland).
You may be thinking of going in to Private Practice....that's very different to the NHS, so all depends where you want to work.
Hope this helps...even slightly ! ;)

Re: best universities in UK for MSc physiotherapy
Hi there,
I have been accepted into glasgow caledonian university for the physiotherapy preregistration program...but i'm still waiting to hear back from robert gordon university in aberdeen.
When i was interviewed ( on the phone as I am in canada), she mentioned that there is not a huge human performance componenet to the physio program at glasgow caledonian university. Does anyone know anything about the program? I don't know a single thing, nor do i know anyone in scotland...so i'm going in blind here.
Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi westcoastgirl,
If you are planning to do a program in UK, why not try somewhere down south ,like England/ Wales?? As Goosey pointed out, unis such as nottingham, cardiff, southampton are the best ones and you need to look @ the syllabus to arrive @ a conclusion.... King's college and manchester are also top rated unis. Glasgow caled has its name but the physiotherapy program there, has its limitations.. Queen Margaret universty has its reputation and offers a good program for physiotherapy( I am unsure about the pre- registration one as I have applied for a post registration course.) Robert Gordon is a better choice than glasgow caled, in my opinion....
Even I cant help you more on this,, because I am in INDIA right now and will begin my course in september.. Anyways, all the best..........
