Tools to assess autonomic nervous system

I'm working on my thesis related to objective measures of chronic pain in patients with fibromyalgia. I was suggested to use heart rate variability (HRV) as an objective method to evaluate influence of chronic pain on autonomic nervous system. Does anyone have comments on this?
