Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm
Hello all. Im a PT and had an interesting patient today whom I just figured out has a cervical
dystonia (involuntary sustained muscle spams of her right SCM). Her doctor has referred her to me and Im just wondering what anyone might suggest I do with her.
Thanks
Pat

Re: Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm

I never see such patient but whatevr i read about it, I think that inhibitory techniques, relaxation techniques, light stretching exercises might be helpful in this condition... i would like to take advice from others also .. what all steps actually should be taken in such cases ???

Re: Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm
Just got home from doctors office and have a left trapezius spasm. Taking muscle relaxants. Advised not to have any massage or chiropractics done. Heat not cold should be applied and if it isn't better in a week, go back to doc. Watch for numbness or strength loss. Take tylenol. Rub on prescription anti-inflamatory cream. That's it. I actually haven't felt anything resembling a spasm just lots of pain when I move, so it's kind of a funny name for the injury, but the doctor I saw, asked my regular doctor who was in the other office doing paperwork, and my regular doctor agreed with diagnosis and treatment. Good luck.
Re: Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm
dear Donna,
This thread surely belongs in the musculoskeletal, not in the paediatric section.
kind regards
Esther
Re: Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm
I was responding to Gupta1984. I didn't look to make sure they had placed their question in the correct section. I googled trapezius spasm and it offered this conversation thread, I am experiencing the same injury as their patient so I shared what my doctor said. I don't understand why you are involved if you aren't participating in the topic. You told Gupta1984 that they had posted in the wrong section. I can't respond in a different section. Gupta1983 wouldn't see it when they logged on to see if there were any responses. I don't understand what you want me to do.
Re: Upper Trapezius Muscle Spasm
Dear Donna,
You are right, sorry this must have been confusing. I should have responded to gupta1984 and ptpats, not you. It does amaze me that ptpats never responded, it was his question.
I am involved and check every post because I moderate the paediatric section.
This post remains in the paediatric section but can now also be read by others looking in the musculoskeletal section.
Chances are high that a lot more people will read and possibly participate in this conversation :)
Hope your spasm has gone in the mean time and wishing you well.
Esther
