Anterior Talofibular Ligament
Hi people!
Basically, I've been having problems with my right ankle for years now after several years of playing a decent standard of football.
No doctor (I've been to 6) has ever come up with a solution to the problem. I then thought back to when the pain first began, and a doc said that I might have to 'resprain' my ankle in order to re-align the mentioned ligament, as it was in the wrong place (or something like that). From what I understand, the ligament was torn off (could be mistaken), and 'manipulated' (again could be wrong) in order to align correctly.
Anyway, I had the procedure done, 5 weeks and 1 day ago now, and I'm currently in a cast. Due to a mix up in dates, I was supposed to have it taken off yesterday, but now have to wait until next week.
A few questions.
1. Would I be able to take it off myself now? My Physio seems to want to get me in one of those big boots you see footie players in for a week or two.
2. If I did take it off myself, could I begin putting a tiny bit of weight on it? And should I begin doing mobility exercises straight away?
Thanks!
Re: Anterior Talofibular Ligament
Hi pne123,
I would strongly recommend discussing your questions with the treating doctor / specialist who put the plaster cast on your ankle in the first place to ensure optimal treatment of your sprained ankle.
Once the treating doctor / specialist has removed the plaster cast and has indicated it is safe to begin mobilisation and weight bearing activity then you should begin mobility exercises and some weight bearing. Usually ankle flexibility exercises and weight bearing can begin early provided there is no increase in symptoms.
I would clarify your situation with your doctor and physiotherapist sooner rather than later to ensure the best outcome.
Hope that helps and good luck!
Re: Anterior Talofibular Ligament
straight away - not, it's impossible, because it can be dangerous.. but to take ligament off - it's all up to you, you are vigorous enough :) the only moment - you couldn't determine by yourself the degree of healthy. only that's why it's better to do everything under control of your doctor

Dear pne123, I have to agree with the answer of the physio advisor. Make sure you follow the stated procedures, as this will allow best results.
