developmentally delayed

I hope I am posting in the correct area.

My sister has a daughter who is now seventeen years old. However, she behaves more like a pre-teen. She is still fascinated with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, super heroes, cartoons, etc. She also has a great love for animals and a vast knowledge, instantly recalling animal names and facts.

She has seen doctors, but has never been formally diagnosed with anything within the autism spectrum or as developmentally delayed.

It seems as though we are missing something here. I would welcome any advice or feedback from anyone with experience in this sort of thing.

Its nothing of that sort from what you have said. I am an orthopedic doctor and aged 28yrs. Still I have fascination with cartoons. That does not really make me developmentally delayed. However, if she is having some problems in academics or specific learning issues, then further followup is essential.

We are not really the people that have been trained to assess someones general cognitive development.
