11 Months Post ACL Surgery
Hi,
I had an operation to repair my right knee ACL (including
meniscus trimming) in February 2010. Everything went fine (with the operation and PT), and gradually started to get back to my exercising routine (running and gym). During the last 40 days, I started working out 6 days a week, 3 days I had kickboxing and 3 football (soccer), my body/knee were getting better. After training, my knee sometimes would get slightly swollen, but that would go away in a few hours. However, 2 days ago my knee (the area above the knee around the "exit" surgical wound and around the meniscus) got really swollen (more than usual) and I could not bend my knee properly because of the swelling. I stopped training for 2 days now and the swelling is getting smaller, but still I cant exercise.
Can someone let me know if they faced anything similar? Or what could be the reason for this?
Thank you.
Re: 11 Months Post ACL Surgery
Hi,
In my limited experience as a student physio, I would say that you have overloaded your knee, and done too much too soon. My advice would be to reduce the amount of activity you are doing, giving yourself a day's rest in between. I think your quads, hip flexors and hamstrings may need assessing (for strength) as they provide the support and strength for your knee.
Unless anyone with more experience can advice differently ?
