Increasing shoulder pain with rest
Hi all,
30 year old male, very well built, lifting heavy weights for 3 years. 2-3 month history of niggling shoulder pain, subacromial area, when lifting weights above head and turning steering wheel.
After assessent is likely to be secondary impingement due to poor scap control and postural dysfunction so treating this.
However over the xmas period, whilst resting, the pain increased dramatically and has settled since started training!?
Anyone have any ideas as to why this might happen?
Re: Increasing shoulder pain with rest
Well - to me you could have one of several issues. Very often when rest and lying on the shoulder creates pain, there is some amount of structural damage - to the supraspin tendon, and the area where it passes under the acromion. Secondary impingement is very common and can lead to your situation. Once your do a lot of overhead lifting the damaged tendon will get impinged. An inflamed or slightly damaged tendon is thicker than normally and therefore more prone to impingement - it is very important that you give the tendon the time to heal - and to continue the rehab for your scapula control - you will have to continously do that rehab - it should become like brushing your teeth - every day a little bit !!! Hope this advice helps you !!!
Re: Increasing shoulder pain with rest
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and is often affected by problems that limit the range of movement in the joint. However, most shoulder problems are short-lived and are not caused by arthritis.
Simple home treatments are often effective and you may not even need to see your doctor. However, more specialized treatments are available for severe or persistent shoulder problems.

Re: Increasing shoulder pain with rest
Often I find that impingements can get an increase in symptoms with rest especially if they have poor posture which
Seems to exacerbate them. Just like side sleeping where the shoulders protracted. I would def go for stability work and posture correction.
Good luck

Hey Charlie
Can you tell us what your assessment consisted of? How is the shoulder now?
Cheers
Re: Increasing shoulder pain with rest
hi charlie
when ur are working out , ther is release of endogenous opiod like substance, so u feel no pain when ur regularly woking out, and even the scapular stability is conditioned ,so even with presence of lesion ie impngment, which is in chronic stage, so give time for it to heel,
contnu wt lifting but dont over do it, let it heal at its own rhythm , gud luck
