standing practise recommendations needed
Hi, we have a standing frame and my partner has been told he must stand for half an hour 3 times a week. This is the minimum from NHS recommendations and less than we would like. When private experts have come to see him they are surprised he is not standing for hours every day and have recommended a sit to stand wheelchair.
Does anyone know what the recommended amount of standing practise is?
My partner has a brain injury and spasticity down one side.
Re: standing practise recommendations needed
Half an hour 3 times a week is a good time, but ... there are a lot of things to do better of standing, I think the best expert would be the physiotherapist who know the subject from time!
Re: standing practise recommendations needed
this does not sound like a lot to me and other experts have said to stand frequently for periods throughout the day. What could be better than standing?
Re: standing practise recommendations needed
Hi,
I am always concerned about generalised statements and performing activities for the pure sake of it, so I would like the following recommendation:
- get an assessment by a Physiotherapist specialising in Neurology/ Spinal Injuries to establish current abilities/ exercise tolerance etc. and to determine patient goals
- the Physio will then develop a standing protocol, which will be monitored and aim at gradually increasing standing duration and frequency - if so desired
There are guidelines for standing after spinal injuries, but they are always adjusted to the individual's needs and goals.
Regards,
Taimana

Get an assessment by a Physiotherapist specialising in Neurology! I can't say what is better than standing in your subject, I know what is better for my patients! After a brain injury are useful: exercise,
Bobath approach, Motor relearning programme, Perfetti and/or Grimaldi approaches, and so on, but only the Physio who know the patient can found the right way, because it's different if injury is near or far in the time, if there is or not "spasticity" and what kind, if there is or not pusher behauvoir, neglect, apraxia, cognitive impairment....and so on! Get an assessment in your town, I'm too far!
