post achilles surgery advice
Hello All,
I am having a little bit of badluck, I work in Spain.
I snapped my Achilles on 19th December in Spain, I was put in a cast due to having to travel to the UK, and operated on the 24th December in the UK.
I returned to Spain and after finally registering with a doctor, they checked the dressing on 6th January and I finally got an appointment yesterday with an orthopedic doctor, they sent me to get a walker boot, which the orthopedic chemist (that's how it works here ) removed the cast and fitted a boot, this was 90degrees and gave me pain, so a Spanish friend after speaking to the doctor, returned it and has come back with a ROM walker with adjustable hinge a protect by medi i think.
My next Doctors appointment is in 1week and I don't know when my first Physio will be. I have no support on the foot but don't know what settings to make this boot or If I should even attempt to fit it and if there is any physio I should be doing now? I know I should have been getting post op care and physio but due to location and even with healthcare with work I haven't found a good doctor yet fingers crossed.
any help on what I should be doing now and my foot is very swollen is this a problem, I can post a pic if it helps.
Re: post achilles surgery advice
I'd see if your surgeon's office could fax you their rehab protocol which will outline what you should be doing at each week post-op; the main thing is not to put undue stress on the repair; you'd be safe lying down, putting your ankle above your heart level and wiggling the toes (not ankle just yet) frequently to help control swelling then let the doc fit your brace; you really should wear the brace at a comfortable angle when moving about just in case you trip and suddenly put weight through the foot; this is admittedly conservative advice, but why risk re-injury?
