Swollen ankle after being taken out of cast for jones's fracture of fifth metatarsal
Hi there - hoping you can help me, as I can't seem to see any advice on line.
I came out of a fibre glass cast two weeks ago after 10 weeks in a cast up to my knee for a jones's fracture of my fifth metatarsal.
Since the cast has been removed my ankle has ballooned up in size and seems to not want to return to its normal size. I have been applying regular hot/cold compresses, have had lymph massage weekly, and keep it elivated as much as I can... difficult for me during the day, due to my job!
Is there anything else I can do - should I be seeking some kind of physio as I was told that I needed to do nothing on being discharged from hospital.
Many thanks in advance!

Hello,
Every advice depends on assesssment clinically, so, u need to see immediately physiotherapist!
In general:
swelling, redness, hotness .............needs ice pack! ,elevation and may be bandage,
do planterflexion and dorsiflexion within limits of pains thats going to improve muscles work, remove waste products...,
during sitting postion avoid dangling of your feet, standing for long time, sitting for long time..,
rang of motion exercises for knee, hip and the sound lower limb should be checked,
u need gait patten correction.....
hope this could help

You will also need to get this assessed by a physio to check you don't have a type of nervous system response that sometimes occurs after fractures and immobilisation, which affects swelling, temperature in the area etc. Also Jones fractures can sometimes be poor healers....did they re-x-ray to check it had actually healed properly?
