Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita & Physiotherapy!!

Dear ALL,

I do have a baby diagnosed with arthrogriposis multiplex congenita ,admitted for the clinic befor 4 months ago...6 months old,male,with bilateral CDH and bilateral club feet and got operation for club feet since 1 month now he is in medical shoes,................

Physiotherapy :

I just giving him theraputic exercises and gentle massage for Upper limbs , nothing for hips as they need surgery at one year old, no thing for feet!!

I was giving him types of endomed stimulation [ for muscle atrophy befor 2 months ,now i stoped it]


I wondering what I can do for this baby? and if there are any comment on the plan of treatment!!


Few hints would help me a lot of!

Thanks a lot of for your answer............but I'm her wondering regarding your answer I'm asking about Arthrogryposis, also known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, is a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by multiple joint contractures.............And Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a problem in the bone itself!! I think there is a difference!! isnot it?

P.S. my mother language is not English,,,,,,,,,,I dont know if both terms are used interchangebally

I am new to the forum. I Also have similar situation. I have a daughter who is five year old with arthogryposis . luckily her upper extremety is only affected. Even though she is gradually improving, i am still in search for other options such as muscles transfer. Anyone who has encountered something like this pls share that are helpful.

I treat several children with Arthrygryposis, none of which are the same. I utilise the childs strengths to achieve what I can, no two children will find the same way of moving. However, I did find it useful to look on youtube to get an idea of what these kids were capable of. They are amazing and children will always find a way of moving. If I can be critical of your treatment selections "junior physiotherapist" (without any offence intended) I would comment that your treatment selections are too passive. I know the child needs hip surgery and are by the sounds of it in a boots and bar, but they need to be taught facilitated rolling, watch closely what movements they have available and work with that.
One little lad I have who is 2 (bilateral CDH, bilateral TEV, prev forg leg deformity) now can crawl, with vertially no knee flexion (20 deg) no wrist ext, no elbow flexion etc. AND HE CAN PULL TO STAND AND CRUISE!!! So strengthen, strengthen, strengthen, use what they have and work hard.

And to Warashak, I have not found muscle transfers to work on these kiddies, the theory of muscle transfers and the pathology of Arthrogryposis do not match up. Your joint isn't going to move more just because you have relocated a muscle. We serial cast to gain range (sometimes accompanied with surgery) and then strengthen in the new range with exercises-that is just specific play.
