To loose weight you need one simple equation: Calories In - Calories out = net gain or loss
Add to that what is available to burn more calories (calories out). The good thing is low intensity for long duration is better for burning fat so this should suit your client. Also they will need diet advice to see whay calaories they are putting in and what are useful for fuel and what are not.
The first step would be to send them away with a daily food diary. They must write down everything and also what exercise they did so you can guage the in and out amounts. get them to do this for 2 weeks and then see them. Just recording this informaton will start to make them think a little more about how they are currently living their life.
My last point is that the 'over 50' comment means nothing. Don't be ageist on this one as all ages can exercise and all can lose weight in the same manner. Medical issues/considerations may restrict how you approach that but not age.

diet and exercise... cardiovascular calorie burning exercise. - physiobob has got it in one... to lose weight you must burn more calories than you eat. suggest referral to a dietician/nutritionist and if the patient's only problem is hypertension (?due to being overweight) then so long as their doctor says it's ok, get them exercising... lots!...walk, ride a bike, hiking, swimming, gym, personal trainer, treadmill... etc... anything that burns calories, then ensure they're eating well and not too many calories and your patient should lose weight. are there sporting groups your patient can join (50 is still very young by the way! but perhaps a "masters" group) for exercise.
