Walking With Cerebral Palsy

I am male, 37 and have had Cerebral Palsy all my life. The condition pretty much confines me to a wheelchair although I can stand if supported. Until the age of twelve I could walk with walking-sticks but after that it got too much for my knees. I also have a severe curve in my spine (to the left).

A friend of mine recently came up with the idea of walking one mile for charity and writing a book about it.

We have made our own frame by taking a wheelchair and hanging a toilet surrouind frame on the back, secured with cable-ties. The wheelchair is weighted down to stop it tipping.

My friend has no medical training and no experience with disabled people, but he comes out with me every day to help me walk. We try to do more steps each day and cover more distance. The most I have done so far is 520 steps (a fraction of the required mile).

I have had a lot of surgery on my ankles to correct deformities. Since preparing for the walk, I have injured my left ankle but it's OK now. I have also suffered sores from my knees rubbing together.

Friends and family say I'm crazy for embarking on this mission.
