Tax questions for a locum

After finally managing to secure Australian registration I'm about to start work in Melbourne. I'm finding it difficult to work out the what's the best way to get paid though so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would I be better to get myself an ABN or just stick with my normal tax number? I'm hoping to be able to deduct uniform costs, rent etc from my tax with being an overseas visitor but am struggling hugely with trying to work out how to do this!
