One of the hardest areas to get under control when you are starting up your own practice is credentialing and billing .... getting paid for your services is never guaranteed. Even if you have been in business for years, credentialing, re-credentialing and billing issues can cripple your practice these days. Have you received your re-credentialing notice from Medicare yet? If you have, please make sure you return it promptly. If you have not, keep an eye out for it. Failure to correctly complete the forms and return them by the deadline means you will not get paid by Medicare until you do. Several practices have been suspended for not returning the forms correctly and have not been paid by Medicare for up to 60 days while they try to jump through all the hoops to get re-credentialed.

I also truly believe, as it gets more and more difficult to be paid through the usual channels, that physiotherapists may need to take a new focus and become more marketable to people paying out of pocket...

That may involve a new perspective and approach. Many uninsured health professionals are successful with this strategy. How? That is well worth researching.

Very true! With the new Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) starting up, it will be more difficult to be paid through the usual channels. I attended an APTA seminar recently on Billing and Coding where they presented the "new" payment schemes that are being proposed and it seems everything is moving towards a payment per session or payment per patient to control costs. The next few years will be very interesting.

forgive my ignorance, but are you are primarily being paid via the government? Or is it via private healthcare?
i.e. how do things work over there?

It really ranges. We have some government funded for clinic for only those under 16 and over 65 who have stayed in a hospital a certain length of time due to the injury. Hospitals tend to be government, insurance funded...I'm learning more about that presently. Some services are out of pocket, I believe.

In ortho clinics, most are not government funded at all in any way. You have out of pocket, full or partial insurance coverage, with MVAs being billed very specifically. And then there's Workmans' Compensation claims, which are again billed very specifically. Approval is required for treatment...

I came across your profile while browsing to check on how private PT clinics are set up in Canada. I am new here and would like to have any further information on regulations on setting up a private clinic, if you can provide me with any info or direct me that would be of immense help to me.
