I have recently receiceved a referral for Apley's Manovuer for a patient with BPPV (Begnin Proxymal Positional Vertigo), as I am only a fresh graduate I don't know how to perform this execrise for the patient. And the M.O want to teach the patient a modified position so that he could perform at home.

It's called the EPLEY manoeuvre and is a series of very very simple steps which anyone can do to a pt to sort out their BPPV: in fact i do it to myself when needed. We see the pt once, perform the manoeuvre on them and give them the list of instructions to follow in case they need to do it again. Basically it's just a case of rotating the head to one side, staying there 30 secs, lying down wiht the head still in the same position, then turning the body etc.

I don't want to sound too picky, but I just like to send a little reminder, that it is vital to actually diagnose BPPV correctly by the apppropriate tests yourself and exclude other causes of vertigo.
About half of my referrals for BPPV aren't actually this and therefore don't respond to Epley's.

You can look it up on google if you type BPPV or use Timothy Hain as an entry who has written rather a lot on the subject also how to diagnose it which is to my opinion rather tricky.
