Hip problem (Goes back a long time untreated)

Hey guys, I started getting hip and bum pain after exercising about 2 years ago.
I found it was mainly when I went home and sat down, and the physio I saw told me to self massage
on the muscle on the outside of my legs which bulge when I put my weight on the respective leg, not
sure on the name, sorry.

Now when I do this I get pain in that region, and spreading way into my bum. The massage seems to
be effective. However I noticed a lot of back pain recently, and when I press on a certain part just
to either side of my spine (I think it's around the bottom of the thoracic region), the pain
I get from my hips is felt. SO does this mean the root may be my back?
Sitting up straight with my back curved has never been my forte since being a young teenager with a
PC, however I have been doing recently and it has partially relieved my hip pain. Could sitting hunched
over be pressing a nerve that supplies the hip region?

It might be worth noting that my mother has back and hip pain very similar to mine, and at her age (46)
she needs weekly massage therapy to relieve the pain.

Hello, your assumption that it could well be your lower back which is causing the problem could be right. Having said this; there are a multiple amount of other possibilities.
a) you point out having sustained over the years in a slumped (bad posture) position does not help. It causes many disfunctions of muscles (poor recruitement of some and shortening and hyperactivity of others) and irritation of a lot of joints involved.
b)poor posture can cause easily bulging of discs or irritation of facet joints (joints between vertebraes) or Sacro-Illiac Joint disfunctions
You point out that your mother of 42 needs to see on a regular basis a physio while the problem is not solved. Since you have no diagnose of your mother's problem, I can only guess; possibility a or b or both. Bulging of discs is a good possibility since that seem to have to do with poor quality of discs which can be inherited.
I would if I were you ask for a diagnose of your problem in stead of getting the advice of just self massaging which will not cure the problem but can keep it under control. The physio should be able to put a working diagnose on the problem if he/she can't you better look for a physio who can.
Example; Poor gluts strength can cause tightening of Hamstrings ( a straight leg raise= SLR should easily give some 85 dgrs hipflexion) tight Hams causing a pull on the pelvis downwards forcing you to slump (people who sit a lot can't recruit Gluts and are prone for tightneing hams)Slumping position makes gluts not work and core muscles neither as a result you're prone for a pelvis disfunction, hip disfunction and core stability issues. Therefore you need to know if the hams are tight, if your pelvis is aligned and if the lower back is not forced in a bad position. A booklet "treat your own back" by McKenzie might be of some help to understand your problem but I would not just do the exercises of the booklet without consulting a physio who will put a diagnose on it in stead of racking in money on a weekly basis.

Thanks for your help! I was intending to see a physio for a second opinion on my shoulder anyway, so I can always see about my hip too.
It's kind of annoying because I know for a fact that my friends had PCs and played at them with bad posture for the same if not longer length of time and yet they are both fine.

Edit: I might just add in a little shoulder question here.

To add on to the sustained bad posture, one physio thinks I have a lower trap/serratus problem which leads to scapular winging. Could the bad posture of caused this? Also when I externally rotate I get a pain in my infraspinatus region and down into my triceps, could this be due to the winging?

Also if I post a video of abduction movements, would you be able to tell me just how bad it is?
