I need suggestion: nerve injury to the hand
Hi, I am giving electrical stimulation to my patient for posterior int. nerve injury in the left hand for 25 days and the injury is a month old. Very marginal improvement in the muscle power is there. Sometimes wrist flexors are responding when I am applying current for the extensor. My friends please guide me to serve better.
Re: I need sugggestion. Nerve Injury to the hand
The management of Posterior Int. Nerve Injury is to do the passive movenments of the joints which cannot move as result of paralysis. The wrist should be splinted in neutral or slight extension by the Cock up splint. Electrical stimulation is performed to preserve the bulk of the muscles being paralysed. There is controversy whether electrical stimulation is useful or not in Nerve injuries as no study support its efficacy. Prognosis of lesion is better assessed by EMG and nerve conduction studies.
