Interview Question

I recently had an interview for a junior post in the UK, however there was one question that really stumped me! I was a prioritization question really involving a scenario-

Q)you have 2 new patients onto your ward (a stroke and a bronchitis), however you only have time to assess ONE...in order to prioritise which pt you will see you can only ask the Nursing staff 2 questions for each pt, what would they be?

Highly unlikely in 'real' practice but has anybody got any good answers that they would have used?

Also it would be a great help if anybody has got any experience of other random questions they were asked in interviews as I have another interview soon and I need all the help i can get!!

Wow! i haven't had an interview yet and am now quite frightened! thats quite a difficult question to think of response to on the spot. I discussed this with my friend who is employed and we both initially said the bronchitis, we then both changed our minds to the stroke patient. I would ask if either patient was deteriorating and was either retaining secretions. It has taken me all day to come to this conclusion though! My reasoning being the stroke patient may be aspirating and need suction etc and the bronchitis may already know how to manage their condition. Also are some types of physio not contraindicated in bronchitis?

Well I answered with great diffeculty!! Im still not sure of the right answer but i will get feedback soon off them and let you know...I came up with a very wofflely answer kind of consisting of what you have suggested...asking if the stoke had any 'chesty' problems that needed chest physio and if they are alert and orientated (if they are not they wouldnt be able to raise any alarms/ask for help etc) and i asked for the bronchitis if it was a long term condition (self managed problem) and if they are mobile (dont ask why tho!). Very very hard to come up with answer i agree!!! Still dont know if i was right or not! I choose the stroke pt too. Also said I would inform/put pts on the on-call list just as precaution - again dont know if that is correct!

u may have to ask about if their status are stable or not if it's O.K. to start with one of them,u have to be careful of infection according to bronchitis!! ,their ages should be consider as if one of them is smaller than other u have to begine with him of course at his stable case...

I have an interview on friday now!woohoo!so off to swat up on all things respiratory (its not my strong point) and all else i suppose.
one of my friends was asked how would her best friend describe her, she nearly responded with ask her yourself shes in next!she never did but got the job anyway. She said it was mainly prioritising caseloads and some stuff about clinical effectiveness.

Hey got feedback for that first question she said i didnt do badly with that one...(somehow!!) It was kind of things we said, like the bronchitis could be self managing so wouldnt be as much as priority just because they are a resp pt. Anyway Good luck with interview, hope it goes well for u!!

First of all , good luck with your interviews .

I agree the first priority to ask a question regarding urgency regarding both patient,s state , in that case you need to referr because in physiotherapy we are working in non-urgency state . Then,we look at other circumstances .
