Please help, Urgent response needed
Good evening all. I am after some urgent help. I am competing in a Tough Mudder event this Saturday, raising funds for Help for heroes. I have been training for months, running up to 11 mile distances with relative ease.
That was until saturday when I had to stop at the mile and half point with pain to my knee. It had felt slightly tight for a week or two before. Please bear with my explanation of the pain:
It hurts most if I go down on my left (good) knee and lean my hips forward, the pain shoots down the right hand tendon (I think) of the right knee, from the knee upwards. Stops half way up my thigh. the pain is similar when running or just getting up off the sofa.
I am ex military so I know how to do my stretches and stretch before and after every exercise. I also play a lot of football and am quite a quick, pacey runner.
I know the best idea would be to rest my knee, but I cannot pull out of this event as I am raising funds for an ex colleague in the army who recently lost his leg in Afghan, I feel like I can't let him down> i am also running part of a team, which again I feel I can't let down.
I would go to the doctor but I start a new job this week so getting time off would not be possible.
All I need to know is how to treat this in such a short space of time, is exercise any good, stretching, heat, ice?? I really don't know.
I would really appreciate any help at all.
Many thanks in advance.
Andy

Hard to tell you how to treat it via a forum without an assessment. If there is full range in the keen when there is no weight on it then the tightness could have been coming from your low back. That tightness could then have upset the normal mechanics of the knee movement and resulted in some patellofemoral pain due to a little overuse in an incorrect motion. Think friction irritation.
Maybe an initial approach would be to do low back extension exercises to see if you can resolve the tightness while resting the knee a little to see how much natural healing you can get. A few days off this week will only help your Mudder event. If you can just book into your local sports PT just for an assessment and guidance on who to approach it for this week as they might be able to pinpoint the specific issue for you :-)

Hi Andy I agree with the last post regarding an assessment but I feel from the info you have given, if I have interpreted it right, you may have a tight ilio-tibial band. Next question would be is why. That is where a friendly physio would come in. All the best. Liz

Hi Andy,
Sounds to me like your in a spot of bother there and quite anxious about Saturday.
I can't go against what you've already been told and if it is a tight ITB then I would introduce yourself to a foam roller, most gyms will have them and give yourself a good roll to see if this alleviates your symptoms.
Again without an assessment then to be given a answer to your plight is in itself difficult so get yourself seen by a Physio even if it is just for your piece of mind. It maybe that you get some treatment and a support to help you with your event.
Something that you did not mention was that is there any swelling? Does it hurt when you go up or down stairs? Does it hurt if you twist your knee? Is there any areas of the knee that are tender to touch maybe on the inside just below the knee cap?
Best response though is to seek advice before it causes you more issues and Saturday does not happen, as an ex-soldier I know where your coming from.
Good Luck
Lee...

Did you hear a popping sound or have a snapping sensation? It can sometimes be heard if a ligament is completely torn.If you feel that you may have a knee ligament injury, you should see a doctor.
