Setting up a post injury ankle class
Hi I am looking into setting up an ankle class in our physiotherapy outpatient department. I was wondering if anyone already has an ankle class in their department and they could provide me with some valuable information. The answers to the following questions would be very much appreciated!
How is the class run? Who takes the class?
What types of ankle injuries do you treat?
Reasons why the class is run?
Where any audits done prior to setting up the class? What where they and what were the outcomes?
Any research that was useful for justifying the class?
Referral criteria and exclusion criteria?
Who refers patients?
Do they get seen by a physiotherapist?
How long do they attend class for?
How is the class structured?
Is the class on going or over a set number of weeks?
Different levels of exercises?
Physio led or an induction with independent exercises?
Is the class a success? Is it popular? How many attend and what are the attendance rates?
What are the benefits of this class and are there any disadvantages?
Thanks to anyone who replies!
re: Setting up a post injury ankle class
Hi Sharon, thanks for your post. I think you perhaps are talking about a standing balance class for people with unstable ankles / unsteady gait etc. Would that be the aim of the class or is it for something only specific to ankles. If so it might be better to discuss this more in relation to balance classes and what people have used in their classes.
I know for example that quite a few people use Thai Chi exercises and Yoga standing postures for this. Some use rolfing ideas. Some use variations on single leg standing, standing on mats, cushions etc. Let us have a bit more information on what it is you are trying to achieve with the class.
re: Setting up a post injury ankle class
Aim of the class is to rehabilitate post-injury to the ankle (they may have had a sprain or a fracture) to get back to previous level of function whether that be sports or even just walking, going up stairs etc.
