Is NZ registration possible with 3yr degree?
Hi All,
This issue has been mentioned on a few threads with conflicting answers. So can anyone say definitively whether they have gained registration with a 3yr degree from a UK university and very little PG experience. I have also contacted the NZ physio board about this and will report back on the correspondance.
Cheers,
Al
Re: Is NZ registration possible with 3yr degree?
No basically, the NZ board will only take:
4yr BSc degree (Ireland and Scotland) with NO post-grad experience :)
3yr BSc degree AND at least 12 months post-grad experience :(
2yr Masters degree AND at least 12 months post-grad experience.:(
I've spoken with the NZ board and these are absolute musts by the sounds of it, they say don't even bother applying unless you meet these requirements as you'll end up wasting your $600 (and a LOT of time doing the competancies). It's kind of frustrating though as all 3 degree's do the same amount of clinical experience but there you go....
Re: Is NZ registration possible with 3yr degree?
The issue is that the NZ Physioboard only accepts tertiary education that is similar to one of the NZ Physiotherapy degree programmes (in contents, length and evidence based approach)= 4 years.
Therefore, if you have completed a three year degree, you need to have done at least 12 months postgrad practice.
If you have got another science degree and completed the two year master degree, your other degree is accepted, but you need to complete 12 months practice, to ensure basic requirements for Physio.
Good luck,
Taimana
Re: Is NZ registration possible with 3yr degree?
Unfortunately the big problem in the UK is getting that 12 months experience. As you're all probably aware there is a dearth of work for new grads over here so we are in the classic "Catch 22" of not being able to get registered without experiece but no(or very little) chance of getting experience.

Re: Is NZ registration possible with 3yr degree?
I have been trying to recruit candidates from Europe to work in our physio clinic here in the South Island and we have experienced a lot of the frustrations that you new grads have. We have been told that you do need at least 1 years work experience and that new grads are unlikely to gain registration here. I sympathise with you all because we have the opposite problem to the UK, we have the jobs but no physio's to fill the vacancies. If any of you out there do gain registration (which you need to before accepting a job really) we are keen to talk with you about jobs we have here. We wll pay your registration fees and return flights and accommodation once registration has been obtained. It is so worthwhile to stick with it and gain registration because NZ is a wonderful place to live and work.........it really is. For more info on our jobs contact me [email protected]:o
