4 Popular Myths of Physiotherapy Debunked!
There are hundreds of myths circulating for every phenomenon in the world. For instance, some people in the world still think that the US did not land on the moon as the video was shot in some desert just to win against its enemy (Soviet Union/Russia). Similar is true for physiotherapy. Recently, when I started talking to people how I want to get physiotherapy in Mississauga, people started talking different myths about physiotherapy and warned me from getting physiotherapy in Mississauga. I am here trying to debunk 4 such popular physiotherapy myths:
1. You Cannot See a Physiotherapist if You Don’t Have a Referral
It’s like you don’t get an email address if you don’t have any previous email. Yes, referral can define the credibility of the physiotherapist or you can require a strong referral if the physiotherapist is quite famous and you are not getting an appointment without any reference. On practical basis, all 50 states of the US allow people to get an appointment with physiotherapist even if they don’t have a recommendation from their personal physicians.
2. Physiotherapy Can Cause Severe Pain
The major purpose of physiotherapy is to relieve your from pain and discomfort. It actually reduces your long term chronic pain. It is just like medical treatment. During medical treatment, you may experience pain during injection or such other medical treatment procedures but the ultimate reality is that it eventually reduces your pain. So you might experience some pain but the ultimate truth remains the same i.e. it heals your body and soul.
3. You Can Only Get Physiotherapy If You Had an Accident
No, absolutely not! The basic purpose of physiotherapy is to make your body perfect. You can get physiotherapy Mississauga or anywhere in the world even if you have not been suffering from any injury or you did not experience any accident. If you think your body is weak and you want stretchable muscles, you can go for physiotherapy at any time you want.
4. Only Surgery Can Solve My Problems
Sometimes, patients suffer from extreme body injuries that they believe that only surgery is the solution of their body injuries. However, this is not true at all. Yes, surgery can solve it but it can be costly and painful. On the other hand, according to a recent survey, 79% of body injuries can be successfully treated by physiotherapy and patients don’t need any kind of surgery. So you can opt for physiotherapy if you have knee osteoarthritis, mensical tears or rotator cuff tears etc.

- Any healthcare professional can perform physical therapy - Remember, not all healthcare professionals can administer physical therapy. you should consider only those with certification in specific areas such as neurology, orthopedics, sports, or women’s health.
- I can do physical therapy myself - Each patient requires expert care and guidance of a licensed physical therapist. He will evaluate your needs and make a diagnosis before creating an individualized plan of care. It is strongly recommended not to perform any physical therapy exercise on your own.
