Hi ,is ther any lemited for exercises for patient with AF
what do you mean by AF
AF =Artial Fibrillation
I think that it is better to do free exercises as long as the patient can tolerate.But before the start of Exercise we need to make sure that it is a slow AF and not fast AF.In case of Fast AF we need to wait till the AF becomes slow.I want to emphasise here that All patients with AF have to be strictly monitored before ,during and after exercise as some times the slow AF can become FAST and uncontrollable.The better time will be to begin half an hour after their medication.
It is also advisable to chek for the resting and peak heart rate before following a exercise plan.
If the AF is secondary to VALVE repalcement ,precaution has to be taken not to put too much strain to the pectoral muscles in the acute post operative phase.
In general all isometrics have to be avoided in cardiac patients.regarding the resisted exercises using weights ,i prefer to incorporate simple aerobics and free exercises as the goal is primarily to improve endurance and not strength.

I don't think exercises can be used as receipies for particular conditions. There is no exercise for AF. The question you should be asking yourself is what is the patient's problem?
Treatment/exercise should be based on what the problem is... if he's got AF... i'm sure the patient probably has an array of heart problems. Depending on the level of mobility/function of the patient... do exercises which will strengthen the heart and improve blood circulation. Eg... walking... cycling... or maybe bed exercises if the patient is bed ridden.

I meant with exercises for patients with AF,exercises for the patient not for AF treatment ,you know that patient with AF may stay in ICU or stay observed for days ,so the question is what kind of exercises for those patients

in response to lamaj545,i would like to emphasise that Physiotherapy management is absolutely contra -indicated in fast AF.but in an acute post operative setting,as in the case of valve replacement most patients are discharged from hospital with AF - slow and controlled.thats where cardiac rehabilitation starts.Even in the ICU we can never give Breathing exercise to a patient with AF if it is uncontrolled.we need to wait till it settles.so right from breathing exercise to simple arm movements we need to chek if his heart rate is acceptable.it will be really dangerous to begin with walking or cycling without cheking on his endurance for simple arm and leg exercises.even walking is also progressed according to his endurance.we need to remember that the cardiac muscle is not the same like the skeletal muscle.we can never encourage the patient to do more exercises as we do with strengthening for skeletal muscle.so instructing the patient to do within his tolerance is the very apt phrase.
I do not think that there is a need of any active exercises to the AF patient as any patient with cardiac arrhythmias. Let the arrhythmia to be settled first medically and seek the advice of the consultant. Physiotherapy in the form of exercises if requested will be the relaxation training to the patient and passive range of motion exercises to avoid the complication of bed ridden.Quote:
