Hi everybody!

Not sure if spelt correctly or below is something completely different....
A 'Ballotable Patella' is discription given when there is a large amount of swelling in the knee.
It is tested by 'Patellar Tap Test' applying a slight tap or pressure over the patella. Should feel the patella is floating.
Can be modified by applying thumb and forefinger of one hand lightly on either side of the patella, stroke down on suprapatellar pouch with other hand...+ve if finger and thumb are moved apart.
Ballottement tests assess joint play.
Hope this helps.
If you apply pressure to the patella and it feels like it bounces back, is squashy underneath or feels like it is floating it is a positive sign for fluid (swelling).
Does this help?
Do not need to pull down, best to do with knee slightly flexed over a pillow and gently tap / press down on knee cap. Or cup under knee cap, with thumb one side and 1st finger the other and gently press down. If +ve it bounces back.
Sorry forgot to add...we know it as the patella tap test.
