dbcubed, interesting story. Either you have intrepreted your physio wrongly or , he/she may have given the short and possibly incomplete answer .
There is a strong link with altered tone and tightness of the calf muscle when irritated nerves , located in the lumbar spine, cause altered patterns of recruitment in those muscles associated with them. In other words , low back problems will routinely cause tight and painfull calves , where no other problem exists in the calf. These are common phenomena and broadly known as somatic referred events.
While the causative pathway does exist where altered patterns of gait,( limping ), may contribute to lumbar spinal protective behaviour leading to low back pain , the reverse is by far the more likely.
Did you consult this physio because you have a calf pain problem?, or low back pain ? or both. In either case, the first step in dealing with these will be at your lumbar spine.
