8mth old & weight bearing
Hi
a quick question from me.....
I have an 8mth old daughter who does not yet take weight thru her legs.... she actively kicks her legs. She does not have hyper or hypotonicity and is developing normally in every way.... from what i have read babies develop this skill betwwen 6-12mths - is that correct? should i be worried? SHe is the only one in mothers group, swimming and socially that has not mastered this yet!!
In the prone position she has started to actively move her legs and appears to be trying to dig her feet/toes in in order to move forward. but she just doesnt take weight thru her legs????
Anything you would suggest? i try and masage her feet and legs for added stimulation on a daily basis.
Advice please???????
thanks
Lxx
Re: 8mth old & weight bearing
Hi Lxx,
Don't worry. You yourself have said that you have read this skill is learnt from 6-12 months so by the time you read this, she might have already started!
Is this your first baby? If i were you, i wouldn't try rush it.
I have 3 kids and they all developed normally but at different times.
For example, if your daughter is "behind" what is "normal" (and what is normal anyway?), then she might be "ahead" in talking or other skills.
I have this untested, wild theory that their brains focus on developing rapidly on certain things at a time.
We thought our son would never walk - and he was HEAVY to carry - but then all of a sudden he just did and now is a faster runner than his older sister!
I am sure your baby is normal...but if in doubt, ask your GP or paediatrician.
Good luck!

... and I second that.
Have got 2 children myself and had to learn (especially with the first one), that nothing works like the textbooks say. Especially in regards to timing of "milestones".
Both my children 'only' made their first attempts to walk with 15 months and are now accomplished dancers, ....
As said previously, if everthing else movement-wise is normal, don't worry. And if you cannot stop worrying, see your GP.
Everyone in their own time ...

Re: 8mth old & weight bearing
You don't have to worry about that, even my nephew he is 1 year and 2 months.. he can't even walk properly and talk.. but the doctor said, no need to worry about that some children are just behind in developing their milestones..
Re: 8mth old & weight bearing
Dear Jonathan,
I agree with every answer that has been posted so far.
The developmental milestones tend to confuse people.
There is an enormous variety of possibilities and a lot of children do not comply with " the rules".
The differences in surroundings, genetics, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th child, care AND the babies personality all contribute to his/her moving around more and more.
As a mother of 2 boys and a PPT'er I suggest you sit back, look at your childs endevours and marvel at his way of exploring his universe. Marvel at his trying and trying again, but do not worry about how and when.
have fun
