It is not lung collapse,
It is difficult to explain, please search "Atelectasis"
Hey Silkysplinter, I see you've posted 4 times about common cardiopulmonary issues. And the questions sound like that of a student? Perhaps get to the library or read you text books? Please excuse me if this is an incorrect assumption but this is all undergrad work! :o
Hi silkysplinter...
Atelectasis is defined as diminished volume affecting all or part of a lung. Pulmonary atelectasis is one of the most commonly encountered abnormalities in chest radiology findings.
Athelectasis is probably exclusively a macro "collapse" of some of the airways - my own personal thinking is that bronchopulmonary segments would be spared and if these become involved you are talking more lobar/segmental/total lung collapse - depending.
Either way athelectasis is probably best seen on hemidiaphragms as blurring and less definition of the normally clear edges and its small in size compared to collapse.
But you would find this in basic text books!
