Hi there, please do not do any thing that can give a relief for few hours, because some time massaging can remove the pain but it may cause dislocation, so better consult a physiotherapist near by you, there are many books on internet that can help but without a practical knowledge this cannot help.

OK, thank you for this. She is actually feeling much better now, but has booked an appointment with a chartered physio who has treated her before just as an additional measure.
Out of interest, can an amateur learn some basics which would help in such a situation or does it require many years of study regardless?

No it is not like that, but it is hard to understand that where to massage and hard to get an idea by just reading, its more of a practical practice that can make you perfectionist. I would rather suggest you to learn few exercises as that can help you and your loved ones.
