Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
I have recently( had it for about 3 months) been getting some sharpish pain in my elbow, which is ofcourse affecting my weight training.
The problem is that the pain is quite strange as its in the actual boney part of the elbow and hurts quite a bit when doing tricep pressdowns and extension type movements for triceps. But funnily enough the pain is not that bad when doing any presseshttp://www.uk-muscle.co.uk/images/smilies/confused1.gif like bench press, shoulder press etc. It also hurts if i put pressure on the actual boney bit or rest my elbow on a table. I have iced it everyday and taken ibuprofen.
Thinking its more of a tendonosis than tendonitis, due to the lenght of the injury. There is no or ever been any visual swelling, just pain.
I've rested it for about a 4 weeks and still no better. The arrows shows where it hurts in the pic below
Any help guyshttp://www.uk-muscle.co.uk/images/smilies/001_smile.gif

Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
This is a typical issue with triceps push downs. Notice that the pronation of the forearm is in a different postion when doing a flat bench or a shoulder press compared to doing a triceps push down. Consider the options of bars for the pushdowns, the more > shaped bar vs. a flat bar v.s. rope. Try with each and then work which is less symptomatic. The forearm needs to be able to rotate during the movement from flexion to extension to allow for normal movement. Otherwise as you mention you can end up with an arthrosis type issue.

Thanks for the reply physiobob, Yes i found the rope extension hurt the least followed by > bar, then most painful was straight bar , which ofcourse i gave up doing!
But could you tell me what do you "think" the actual problem is? It's also slightly tender about 1cm above the Olecranon process, if i put pressure on it with my fingers.
The injury happened while i was peforming lying tricep extensions( where you bring the bar to you forehead ). Also would it better to use heat than ice now to heal the injury? However while resting i do not feel any pain or even notice the injury, so hopefully i have not done any serious damage...??
It's really frustrating that i have been out the gym for long, so any help appreciated on the fastest way to recover an injury of this type?
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
do you have popping feeling in the bony area when you do extension and flexion. If you do you might have snapping triceps syndrome.

hey Melvin
There is no popping feeling, just a sharp pain near the tip of the elbow.
Any other ideas...?
Got an appointment with Doctor on Friday
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
You should be using an EZ-Bar for the lying triceps extensions and get a spotter to check that you are not deviating in a weird way with the elbows during the exercise as a result of to much weight or fatigue. You really need a physio to take a look, and one that understands the range of triceps exercises. Your GP is unlikely to be able to give you any useful diagnosis or a much needed plan or prevention and rehabilitation.

I always use a EZ bar, but It still hurts, so i stopped doing them. I understand what you mean regarding GP's, they really never have a clue regarding sports injuries and the only advice they give is rest it and take painkillers, but I have been resting it for nearly 5 weeks and still no better.
I was going to ask for a cortisone shot as I know of a few people that have had them for a tendon injury similar to mine.
Would the GP refer me to Physio? or do i need to see and osteopath?
It's been nearly 4 months now and it's affecting me at work as i have a physical job. So need to sort it ASAP.
Thanks
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
Ask the GP to refer you to a good outpatient physio. If you like weights I would not go for a cortison injection if the injury is to a tendon as this weakens it in the long-term. Also consider not doing lying triceps extensions at all as they are not necessary i.e. they are an abnormal movement for the elbow. Push-ups, dips, push downs, close-grip lat pulls to the front and normal upper body work would be enough to give you great guns :)
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
Just an update, i went to the docs yesterday and he thinks it could be Elbow bursitis,as i's slightly inflammed bove the olecranon process. Yet i don't really have the typical swelling. He has refered me to a orthopeadic, so I'm waiting to get a letter in the post of my appointment.
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
I ve exactly got the same problem as you.. Its been two months for me too and it is yet to completely heal. I would advise you not to bench press and other such exercises which place stress on your elbow with heavy weights coz I did that mistake and it just got worse. Then its been sometime with doc and physio and it is improving but still not completely ok. Do you see any improvement by now? BTW i think its not bursitis coz all the symptoms correspond to a tendon injury!
Re: Strange elbow Pain for 3 months.........
Few weeks ago there was same problem with me also an extreme pain in my elbow in right hand. I was not able to move my right hand and hold a pen for writing properly.

Yes my Injury is alot better now. I went to see a rhumatologist(sp) who gave me a cortisone shot which helped quite a bit. You are right it was a bad case of tendonitis. I'm back training now but staying away from heavy tricep extensions as it's not 100% recovered.
