Bone sticks out on right side of butt/sacrum. Twisted pelvis?

When I was around 14/15 when I went through a growth spurt a bone on my butt started sticking out.

I don't know what it's called but its the bone just at the top of the crevice of my butt. There seems to be two of them, one on each side. The one on the left smoothly fits with the rest of my pelvis but the one on the right sticks out a lot so much to the point that sitting for a long time causes a numb burning pain. I don't have any back or leg pain but the pain does radiate into my hip and top of my pelvis on the right side.

I have noticed that when I stand I shift most of my weight onto my left leg. I think my left leg is shorter than the right leg. Whenever I shift my weight onto my right for more than 10 seconds I get a pain/pressure build up in my pelvis on the right side. The muscle on my right hip and pelvis is a lot thinner than the left too.

Does this sound like a twisted pelvis?

EDIT: another thing I noticed when doing squats as I bend down I can bend down straight but when I come back up my pelvis doesn't come up straight on the right side, it kind of comes up in a circular direction.

you may have a sacro-iliac dysfunction (twisted pelvis) or if it happened whilst you were growing, it may be a dysfunction caused by a growth plate problem meaning you may have one side of your pelvis or one leg longer than the other. go see a physio experienced in sacro-iliac dysfunctions for an assessment and to get an idea of what is up.

As well, a question. Have you ever fallen or had a blow to that part of your anatomy? The tailbone is in the area, and if you had a trauma it could have fractured and healed at an odd angle.

Yes, plenty of times. I used to love playing soccer pretty passionately when I was a kid and would even play through injuries.

Yes, that might be a possibility. So with the pelvis you have the two bones as you describe, on either side of the crevasse of your butt. However, the tailbone falls down between these. So if it fractured and healed at an angle, you may be perceiving the pelvis to be at an odd angle, when it may be the tailbone.

Until someone in the know can palpate, or you get an X-ray, it's difficult to know for sure.

I am finding it difficult to find a name or image for this bone that's sticking out but I think it may be the right-Cornua (See Image) which is located on top of the coccyx/tailbone?

I have a few more questions if you don't mind. What I am most concerned about is how this will affect me as I age. As I already mentioned the muscle on the right side around the pelvis and hip is lacking compared to the other side - how do I decipher whether this is from under use or because it is wasting away due to inflammation? and will it get worse? It gets tender in that area pretty quickly - is tenderness a sign of inflammation?

Well if you feel the bone is that far up, it is definitely not your tailbone. I think seeing a physio is a most excellent direction, especially considering you have muscle atrophy (less muscle) on that side compared to the other. Inflammation tends not to be a big waster of muscle, rather nerve dysfunction of some type does. Whether this is due to muscles that have become extremely tight and are compressing nerves, or if you're getting compression on the nerve root, or if the nerves are having other issues, this is usually why muscle wasting/atrophy occurs. Sure, longterm inflammation, so disuse of a muscle can create an issue, but...can't find it here presently, I think you are still quite young??

Go see a physio. You'll have your concrete answers then. Here we can only speculate and give general advice, as we're not actually assessing you. Good luck!

Hey JonnyD. I am experiencing very similar symptoms (though not as severe). Just curious if you had gotten a concrete diagnosis? I am currently experiencing a TON of pain sitting and I suspect my tail bone is somehow twisted to the right or otherwise misaligned. I plan on showing this thread to my physiotherapist tomorrow.
