Should I Continue with Gym Exercises?
Hi Physios,
I am a very active 70 year old but started to feel stiffness in joints on getting up in the morning so. in January, decided to join the local gym.
I was advised to do a Cardiac and stretch routine and I am feeling much fitter generally . However, since then, I have started to feel pain in right hip. This usually occurs on standing up after sitting for an hour or so. I have never had problems with my hips before.
As well as the Treadmill I use the machine where you have to push legs out against weights (in a sitting position) then a machine where you pull your legs in, also against weights. Then, on other machines you push legs down and pull up - also against weights. The weights were originally set at 15 but I have gone up to 20.
Do you advise I stop these exercises or work through hoping the hip discomfort will cease?
Re: Should I Continue with Gym Exercises?
Ditch the treadmill. Limit leg press to outer range only. Work on upper body in supine and sitting. Do not give up on gym, just adapt.

Thanks for advice Redsok. I hate the treadmill - its so boring - so thats easy. I will try the advice on leg presses.

I would also see a physio to determine the source of your hip pain. Knowing what you have injured will enable them to give you advice that is customized to your situation.
