Use of PRICE for soft tissue injuries
Hiya
I'm a physio student writing an essay on the importance of healthcare professionals being aware of the PRICE and HARM acronyms for treating sprains and strains.
Does anyone know of literature to support the protection aspect of PRICE?
Cheers! Fi

Hi
You might also want to look into the POLICE regieme which has replaced PRICE in most departments. It's protection, optimum loading, ice, compression, elevation.

Thanks AJP, is this the case for sprains and strains? I was under the impression loading was only encouraged in sprains? Fi

Yeah, that's the rule for all soft tissue injuries. They should be loaded to the point of mild discomfort only. This is especially important to begin after the first couple of days post injury to encourage healing. If you go even deeper into this topic you will find some leading sports medicine authors who disagree with the entire PRICE principles arguing that inflammation is essential after injury for correct tissue repair.

Ah great, I'm just looking at the acute stage (48-72hrs) so that's perfect. Cheers for the advice! Fi
