Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Guys,
This is a great tread and really useful, thanks to everybody that has contributed! Its great to hear that have been assisted through individuals from the forum.
I have just recieved transcripts and syllabus from Uni so am ready to put together the start of my competency sheets for my registration.
I have a few years experience so I think I will be ok for the work based stuff, although I haven't done any Neuro or Resp for quite a long time.
I am looking for some guidence on how to fill the competency templates out, particulary how much information of a description to put down for each sub section or do I just refernce everything to an appendix?
I would really appreciate it if anybody could email me a couple of competecy template examples so I can get an idea of how best to fill them out. My email address is [email protected]
Hope someone can help me out??
Thanks
Andy

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hello,
Thanks for all the info everyone. I am wondering if anyone has the competency templates that they wouldn't mind sending along to me ([email protected]). It would be greatly appreciated! Also, I am struggling to know what to submit for supporting evidence. Have people been submitting work from school? (I only have one year of post-grad experience, so a lot of my evidence would come from school, but in the application notes it says it needs to be post-grad) how many reflection pieces are people submitting?
Appreciate any insight people can give...

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi,
sorry, cannot answer your questions, but just noted that as location you have listed "Melbourne, Australia".
Do you have Australian registration? Because if so, you wouldn't have to go through the process at all, but apply for NZ registration under the TTMRA. ???
And some other comments:
- if it says post-grad, it will mean post-grad not under-grad. :-)

ONLY one year? Haven't you done any PD in that year? Performance appraisal, objectives setting, peer reviews, presentations, literature searches, SWOT analysis, ...? My new grads certainly have to undergo quite a lot in their first year.
Good luck,

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
I am originally from Australia and moved back here a year ago. I'm not registered here because we're planning to move to NZ. My husband has family and a job there. IF we plan to ever move back to Australia then I know I can use the TTMRA.
I attended several continuing education courses and gave several in-service training to the staff I worked with, so I am submitting those. I have one performance review. I just hope they are considered "Strong" pieces of evidence or if I should supplement them with reflective pieces. How many relective statements are appropriate to include?
-
Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi,
I have recently looked at the stuff with an English physio friend of mine. She wrote reflections for those competencies where she believed that she might not have enough pieces of evidence.
Have you got the application guidance notes? They are on the website.
Page 16 gives you a list and examples of strong evidence ...
Cheers, Fyzzio

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Kempo1981
Thank you very much for your kind offer regarding sending the completed copies of the templates and also example of reflections on practice. If you are still willing to send it, I would be very greatful because I am struggling with this form.
My email address is [email protected]
Thanks again.

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi,
Glad to see I'm not the only one finding this exteremely detailed and time-consuming and happy to have a forum to discuss questions. Any suggestions for the below queries would be greatly appreciated!
1)For each of the three core area templates the forth section asks to 'Demonstrate autonomous practice as an entry level physiotherapist encompassing cardiovascular/pulmonary, neurology and musculoskeletal bases of physiotherapy management.'
I'm going to include the clinical placements which state in the hand-book increasing autonomy but obviously for pre grad section it wont be as entry level therefore contradiction really. Another other suggestions about what people have included in pre-grad section. It's also different from the rest as no seperate components. What have people inlcuded in post grad work I'm assuming IPR's e.t.c
2) Is everyone transfering their current reflections into the template the board provide? I know someone who gained reg last year and she said she didnt do this, is it a new requirement?
I'm sure there will be lots more q's :).
Thanks
Claire

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Claire,
How you getting on with it all?
1) For the entry level stuff, I have used undergrad evidence from placements preparing me for graduate level practice, particularly final placement and from the final year modules, reflections and presentations from modules which state in the course handbook that it is aimed to ensure the student meets the requirements for entry level physio. We also completed a module in professional practice which included a reference to the KSF so have used this.
For the postgrad section I've just included a range of everything from each core area that I've completed as a post grad.
2) Yes I have transferred all of my reflections to the template, this might not be a requirement but I don't want to risk them sending it back.
When you planning on moving over to NZ and where you going? I'm hoping to have all the documents and everything completed to send off in Jan (well thats the deadline I've given myself), been doing it on/off alongside FT and PT employment for about 4 months now and slowly getting there.
Good Luck
Julie

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Julie, Thanks for replying :)
I have set myself the deadline of end of October but who knows if I'll have completed it, very hard to do a full time job alongside! I am aiming to leave the Uk in January and will travel untill autumn 2013 so aiming to be in NZ around Sep/Oct. Ideally I would like to work in South Island but a previous colleague of mine has a job in Auckland so I think I will settle where the jobs are!
I didn't think we could include pre-grad evidence? I know previously you could but seems to have changed recently, I will probably cross referecnce evidence to prove my autonomous practice!
Currently I am struggling with the middle section, not sure whether to keep it general or too go into detail e.g should I say I use outcome measures or literally list all the ones I use.....think I'll keep it more general. I'm going to ring the board tonight as really need to clarify some points.
When are you planning to get to NZ? Have you been qualified long?
Good Luck
Claire

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Everyone,
Have been trawling through this thread and wondered if anyone could update me on the current situation in NZ in terms of job availability? Need to check if it is as bad as the rumours suggest before I start the registration process.
Also, like many have requested before (last plea) would anyone be kind enough to send me an example of how they completed a template? to [email protected] really appreciate it!
Many thanks

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Has anyone managed to get registration since the forms were reviewed in may 12? Have people sent off clinical placement reports and did you need any additional stamps from the university for these? Did anyone manage to get he registration before getting a visa through?many thanks, great thread and has been very helpful so far.

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Julie,
did you get your registration in dec 11? Would it be possible to send me an example of one of your templates? I have put all my paperwork I think I need together but want to ensure that I have included everything that I need to. I am worried that my neuro and respiratory evidence may be weaker.
Regards
Jo

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Dear Kevin, at the moment I am in the process of application. Same as a lot of people I find trouble with the templates. Could you maybe send me an example of one of yours? If you would: [email protected].
Thanks anyways!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi everyone,
There's some useful information on this thread which is so helpful as the new format application form feels a little repetitive and confusing! I started applying for registration a couple of years ago and got side-tracked so it was quite a shock to return to my application recently and essentially need to start again. Like a few other requests on here I would really appreciate it if anyone could email me a copy of a successfully completed template to gain an idea of how much detail is required. It certainly implies in the guidance notes that the templates are more of an index of supporting documents than anything - is this correct?
I have plenty of content from my old application notes to create reflective statements - so may be able to help with Treaty of Waitangi info...
[email protected]
Thanks

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Guys
I thought I'd just let you know a few things so that you could learn from my mistakes.
- When the board say to do it on the most recent forms they mean it! I never checked to see if forms had been updated since I originally downloaded them and sent them off in Sept. The board have sent the whole application back to me.
- Also make sure your referees send the original form through as photocopies will not be accepted.
- Do not copy and paste job descriptions from your jobs(nhs in my case) directly into the CV. This needs to be in your own words.
- If you send a certificate as evidence, make sure it is accompanied by a reflection.
- For the treaty of Waitangi, it was suggested to me to include reference to research undertaken with regards to the treaty.
Anyway, I'm off to complete another application!
Good luck

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Thanks for the update, really useful info. its taken me so long to do that my forms at the beginning may have ran out, aiming to complete it all in a month.

Are you still ok to give tips and advices? I am French and actually live in Australia. I do have a lot of questions about the New Zealand registration...

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hey Guys,
I am about 4/5ths of the way through just awaiting a few documents. If anyone is currently in the process and looking to pool information together let me know as I am trying to ensure mine gets off first time and doesnt get sent back.
Let me know!!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
HI Coillte,
Was just wondering if you could clarify your point 4. When you say certificates do you mean CPD courses? Because on the application guidelines it states that CPD certificates must be accompanied by course descriptions and I wasn't aware that we had to do a reflective statement on it at all?? Is that what they wrote to you?

Hi I sent mine off last week AGAIN after it was returned to me with changes/additional info needed! I thought i had checked and checked 10 times the first time, but its sent off again now. Im living in Auckland, been here 5 weeks. They send it back for the most tiny changes needed. They are pretty strict. I can help if there are specifics you are concerned with.

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Thanks, I appreciate the reply. There were one or two things I was concerned with. Firstly for the proof of getting a visa or that you are aiming to travel to NZ do they reqire that you have the visa obtained before applying? I'm not to keen on spending money on getting a visa if I dont get registration? I was going to just put in the working hliday visa form but from the sounds of things that would just get returned??
Also for CPD courses someone had stated you need a reflective statement done on all the courses you've attended but on the guidelines it states a certficate for CPD with accompanying course content and schedule is seen as 'supporting evidence'.
Also in the competencies did you just write in where the relevant document was located in your application or did you write a little paragraph or sentence relevant to the competency?
Could you point out some of the issues you've had as from what I am reading I am quite fearful despite spending way too much time on this bloody application it'll be sent back for something I may have missed! I'm so close now and just want it done and dusted!
Cheers, really do appreciate any help you could provide

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hey Nutmeg97
All you need for visa is a typed page explaining your plans on getting a visa. Write a paragraph explaining planned arrival date and which visa you will be applying for. Maybe put an email from the visa beurau in to show them you have been looking into it. I got mine through the 'family stream' as my husband has a work visa. But it doesnt matter which visa you are getting, just show some evidence of your plans. No you dont need to get the visa before being here.
For CPD courses you just need a page/paragraph explaining the course description & outline. You can make this page and put it with the course certificate. No reflective statement needed for this.
Make sure ALL copies of important documents (i.e. passport/uni degree certificates) are certified correctly. Read the guidelines and make sure your certifier has done it right...even if they are a solicitor (they can still make mistakes).
My main issue was not enough info on my first degree (sports science) I did it so long ago the course descriptors were too vague so i needed i cover letter from the uni explaining the detail of my course. But that was just me. If you have only a Physio degree they dont have anything else to be picky about!
I'm just waiting now
I'll get back to you if it gets returned for the second time!
Cheers

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi guys, everyone gets there's returned once, but don't fret it will go through easy enough. Nutmeg you just put on form 'awaiting acceptance prior to applying for working holiday visa', theyre happy with that.
I'm from UK and employed currently as a physio in NZ (start oct '12), my contract is until feb '14. obviously my working holiday visa is only 12 months, but I understand you can't extend it to work further, is this correct? if so, what visa should i get please? queenstown awaits for an adventure afterwards, then oz via trans tasmanian. Live the dream! :)

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi there asher66
You need to apply for a work visa. I have one of them valid until 2015 It only took one week to process (i'm in Auckland)

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hey guys,
Just a small question about how much experience you need for the second parts of the competencies- how much experience is needed. I have been working in a neuro setting for four years, I would be okay with resp but I dont have a lot of musculoskeletal experience. I am in Oz at the moment so I cant work to gain any more experience, would you guys recommend me to do a course to prove I am competent in this area.
Thanks so much for your help,
Mairead

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
I have a similar query to Maireads if anyone would be able to help if possible.
I did a 3 year BSc Physio degree that included the 1000 Clinical Hours required and have 15months post graduate experience but my postgrad experience has pretty much no CVP experience. What do you put into the '3-5 items of postgrad supporting evidence' section if this is the case? I have 1 or 2 reflections of the minimal CVP postgrad interactions I had, but the board advises not to use too many of the same types of evidence. Has anyone any idea what else could be used? Have looked into getting any upcoming Resp courses but cant seem to find any (in Ireland).
Any suggestions/help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm still waiting for Registration to get processed!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi,
Im in a very similar situation, my post grad experience is more neuro orientated so im finding it difficult to get evidence of specific MSK and CVP things. I have mainly done some reflections and i read a couple of articles that i have done appraisals for. How have you got on? managed to find any evidence?
Annika.

Hi,
I'm still in the middle of completing mine but have done pretty much the same things as you; reflections of any areas I didnt see very often, included presentations I had done in those areas, and included my registrations body's core areas as supporting evidence. Hope that may help?!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi everyone,
This feed is great help, and congratulation to those who have their registration. I'm nearly there with my project now. I've sent several emails and had phone calls with the NZ physio board. They are really helpful!
Just a quick question though. I'm getting confused about the Treaty of Waitangi reflection. There are the principles of Protection, participation and partnership, but there's also the 'principles for crown action on the treaty of waitangi'. How do these relate to each other, and how do they affect physiotherapy?
And the contents list - has anyone for any suggestions as to the best way to format this?
Many thanks,
Charlotte

To be Honest as far as teh Treaty is concerened I just did an A4 general overview of the treaty, didnt mention the crown and related it to working with diverse population in my demografic area in the UK that i have previously worked. You dont need to go deep into it at all.
With regards to the contents list, i'm happy to email you mine for guidance if you want to PM me i'll give yu my email address.
Looks like your getting there

HI there, The best thing you can do is do some shadowing or better still get on a resp course like you said. You may have to go to England to do this, they run most weekends in a city somewhere. I'm afraid in order to be able to provide enough evidence for those sections you must have post grad experince of some sort.
Sorry, maybe not helpful

You will need to go onto the The New Zealand Board of Physiotherapitsts website and do a quick self assessment to see if you can register. You will have to take language exams and do the whole registration process we are all doing. I have heard its not easy, but possible for Indian trained physios.

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Mairead
Yes a small resp course will give you some CPD evidence in the resp areas, it need not be a huge expensive weekend course, but it should cover enough for you to reflect and use info from thre course, ie certificate etc
-
Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Very True....
For nearly all the same reasons mine got sent back too! I have changed CV etc and now been told to wait a further 4 weeks at least...but they have taken my money so i guess thats a good sign?!!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Guys,
Just giving an update, I got some great help along the way from a few people on this thread, thanks again. My application is currently with the board. They received it well over three weeks ago and I have only received a letter confirming they had received it. I was waiting as it advises the process takes 2 months but I don't think this is currently the case, I think mine is going to be a bit longer than that. I rang through as I hadn't heard anything in over three weeks and from what I can gather they are just sitting on a desk waiting to be looked at. I was given no indication when it would be looked at I was informed it would now take a minimum of three months due to a backlog. On top of this I do not yet know whether or not everything is correct or if they will send it back yet as they haven't even looked at that part. It is very frustrating when I spent months putting it together and checking and checking everything to ensure it was right.
I want to work and travel in NZ I really do but if this persists I will be going to Oz as my college course has equivalency and to be honest the process appears far more efficient and structured (if I sent off my application to Oz I could get it in two weeks) but I did not know this when I applied to NZ as i would have gone through the Trans Tasmanian way but hindsight is a great thing. I just can't believe Kevin had so much ease getting into NZ despite most people on this thread having applications sent back numerous times.
If any one has had similar experiences or thinks I am being far too inpatient please show me the light but I found it easier to obtain a degree in college compared to NZ registration!!
(P.s. if my reg comes through first time and I've no issues I will happily provide any help with applications or templates etc but should probably wait to see if what I've done is correct!)

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi Nutmeg,
January is a bad time to send your application in.
We have about 300 Students who graduate at the end of December and they will all have to get registered by the Board as well.
I don't know, but presume that the NZ graduates take preference to foreign applicants in terms of getting registration - and , by the way, it's the same for Australia around this time.
;)
Cheers, Fyzzio

Yeah no don't get me wrong they were more than helpful when I rang, if its busy and there are lots of applications there is nothing that can be done. Its just more the process really, with Australia my degree course was given equivalency due to the course content because its so similar to the syllabus studied there. Therefore I could have paid to get Oz reg and then trans tasmanian through to NZ. But I would end up paying registration and visas in the two countries but if my degree could be recognised in NZ rather than indirectly through OZ i'd be a much happier camper!! To me its red tape I feel as it should be internationally standardised to allow for more scope for physio's to travel and work worldwide, it is actively encouraged and supported in medicine. Sorry just my two cents appreciate the reply though! Hopefully it'll come through soon!

Re: New Zealand Registration in 8 weeks
Hi everyone,
Reading all of these posts has been really helpful. I am currently working in Oz but as you all may know, the registration process to stay here has become very difficult. Long story short, I am now going to have to register to do the exams if I want to stay. Not only does the idea of this fill me with dread but it also costs a fortune! I am thinking of using the NZ route to bypass this scary experience. I have read through the forms and see that there is so much work to be done which is fine. I graduated in 2010 but do not have any of my projects, placement info etc and wonder if this will be problematic? Also, I note that the form wants to know if you have applied for a job or visa. Am I right in thinking that as the process is so long, can I apply for a job and visa once the application was complete? And is anyone else in my situation? I'm really feeling like I may need a lot of support and advice on this endeavour!!
Well done to those that have achieved registration!
