Muscles Responsable for Fingers Movement

Hi all,

I am an engineering student and for my end of year project I will be monitoring EMG signals from muscles responsible for fingers and thumb movement.
From research I found that there are muscles responsible for contracting more than one muscle. If this is so, how are we able to control fingers individually?
Are there separate muscles responsible for contracting each individual finger?

Any kind of help would be highly appreciated.
