hi all,
Epilepsy is a temporary physiological dysfunction of the brain caused by a self-limited, abnormal hypersynchronous electrical discharge of cortical neurons.
It is characterized by repeated seizures that continue intermittently throughout life unless successfully treated.
It affects about 1 % of the population
Causes of Abnormal Cellular Discharge :
Trauma (head injury, birth trauma, concussions )
Oxygen deprivation (ischemia)
Tumors
Infections (meningitis or encephalitis).
Axonal sprouting after neuronal injury.
Metabolic disorders (e.g. hypoglycemia).
Genetic epilepsy.
Drugs and alcohol
After neurosurgery
Febrile seizures (convulsions)
No specific causative factors can be found in more than 65% of the cases.
