    Rehabilitation for head injury

Hello,i had an accident before 4 years and as a result my left hand and foot had paresis.i am doing physiotherapies since then, and i have regain my movement to 70-80%.the main problems are located to my wrist which has movement but it needs further improvement, and as a result my fingers cannot also open(but they have small movement).the second problem is located to the foot(the part which is to the ankle and down, the part which goes inside the shoe(sorry i dont know very good english,i hope you understand what i want to say)which has movement but the left side is fallen, and when i am trying to lift my foot,it doesnt lift straight(sorry i can say it to english, dont know the words),so i use a splint.i can see the improvement to myself, but it is slower than it was at the beginning.so i would like to suggest me some centers which are specialized to this kind of ''problems'',in case that my physiotherapists here in greece won't solve the problem.i know that i won't be like before due to the brain damage, but i want to live a normal life, and almost all my doctors told me that i will regain my movement up to 90-95% of the normal.thank you!

    Re: Rehabilitation for head injury

There are several good clinics in London, e.g. the neuro department at the Wellington hospital. BUT bring your money with you!!!!

p.s. Your symptoms are very typical following head injury. Sounds like what we call a foot drop and perhaps some flexion contracture/spasticity in the hand/wrist due to poor extensor recruitment. 4 years in there is hope for some change but that will be slow and take a long time with regular practice of the specific exercises that are prescribed. I just mention this as gaining anything may require yrs, not weeks, of dedication from you.

You might also look at a SAFO for your foot drop (Silicon Ankle Foot Orthosis). These provide a more natural support than a rigid AFO.

    Re: Rehabilitation for head injury

Each SAFO is individually made to a plaster cast model of the patient's foot to ensure the best possible fit. The Orthosis can then be manufactured with the choice of either one or three straps and a single or full colour skin match. The device can be worn with or without socks in a normal shoe. The silicone is non-permeable; therefore it can be used in the shower or while swimming.

A good SAFO manufacturer can also make this quite light. It allows some natural movement in ankle bend that will permit small normal movement patterns to be exercised if they are available. There are also much less problems with pressure areas or rubbing that can happen with more rigid AFO's.

In short anyone that wears an AFO would wear a SAFO given the option (and money to pay for one of course). On of my clients recently went to Germany to get a new even lighter pair that have kevlar embedded in the front of the ankle. This makes them even more stabilizing whilst reducing the overall weight further.
