Yes, usually refer to an orthotist. Just make sure the TA has sufficient length and there is adequate hind foot range, and there isn't lateral boarder tightness in subtalar neutral...if there is serial cast 1st to get the range.
Has anyone any experience/ evidence on the use of orthoses for valgus flat feet in children? Do you or your Consultant ever prescribe them? If yes do the children/ parents find them beneficial?

As a podiatrist I see alot of kids with 'flat feet'. We tend to look at the mechanics of the whole lower limb thwn just the foot. Internally rotated hip positions and genu valgum - which are normal at certain ages - can effect the foot position. Orthotics can be used to alter foot function but as with all conditions it is better to treat the cause not just treat what we see. I certainly wouldn't refer a kid to see an orthotist.
working with children needs a lot of patience and for orthitic prescriptions make sure that it will not alter thr growth of the child.
I won't recommend orthosis for flat feet, shoe inserts or wedge support would be much appropriate especially when the child starts to stand and walk but have to be very careful as this may sometimes be a cause of another problem.
