    Brief Medical History Overview

    Major Elbow injury

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi

Firstly, let me apologise as this will be a lengthy explanation of my injury. Please take the time to read it though as I am very keen to heal this problem.

I have an elbow injury that is now 10 months old. I was taking part in a Boxing match and went to throw a straight punch but missed. I Hyper extended the elbow and felt a sharp pain in my elbow. I carried on as the adrenaline was masking the pain.

Since this has happened I have tried the following to help heal the injury:

    1. I have been treated by a Personal Trainer that has specialised in sports massage. He is also training to be an Osteopath. He has told me that it is a joint injury (not specifically Tendon or ligament but the whole joint capsule). He prescribed gentle isometric exercises and forearm/Bicep stretches.

    2. I tried Acupuncture, which seemed to work well but did not completely heal the injury and seemed to stop working as well after a number of sessions .

    3. I have had an Ultrasound and Wikipedia reference-linkMRI scan on the elbow but nothing major showed up on these. I was told to try and return to training but to take it steady.

    4. During all of the above I have used a TENS machine, and tried using ice and heat packs.

I feel the injury has improved from its worst period but is still not right. I can now do some punching exercises without any pain but as soon as I try sparring and miss a punch I feel that sharp pain again (I have now stopped sparring).

So, Here is what I would like to know:

    1. Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process? e.g strength exercises, ROM exercises. If so which exercises will be best and what sort of rep range?

    2. Shall I stop Boxing completely even though I dont feel any pain when hitting a punchbag etc?

I would be very grateful for any advice.

    Thanks.

    Re: Major Elbow injury

    Hi man,
I am a Thai boxer and have what sounds like to be the exact same problem for about 6 months now, I rested for the past 6 weeks and started hitting pads today, first time i missed with a straight right i got that shooting pain at my elbow joint, it only lasts for a few seconds and then im fine, i also feel no pain when i make contact with something, its only when i miss.
I was just wondering have you got any answers yet? ive only tried resting it but was thinking of trying accupuncture.
If you know of anything please help!

    Re: Major Elbow injury

    Hello mate.

I have made progress. I have spoken to a doctor who is certain I have torn the tendon in my elbow. He prescribed some really strong anti inflammatorys called 'Peroxicam Betadex'. These are for people who have severe arthritus! I took these along with 'Omeprazole' tablets which combat the side effects of stomach pain and rashes (I didnt get any of these).

I took one of these tablets a day for about 3 weeks along with complete rest and the problem has really improved. It is not completely better but I can hit pads etc and have no problems.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Major Elbow injury

All I did whilst resting was some running, sit ups, lower body weights. Any elbow extension exercises are not good! especially overhead tricep extensions and similar exercises.

    Re: Major Elbow injury

Usually body will recover itself, but will take some time. Any way you have to make sure that the point of injure still in the same shape as before then the thread will be more quick and easier and also possible the be same. So I'd recommend the Acupuncture with a professional one this way very quick but you have to do it until your body is come back to normal and in this period you should stop boxing.
